(Based on the article of Uma Mehra Ghosh, Hindustan Times, 1997)
Ancient Indian texts over 5,000 years old speak of a universal energy called Prana. The Chinese in the 3rd millennium B.C. talked of vital energy which they called Ch'i. In Greek it is called Pneuma, and Ruah in Hebrew. This life force keeps the body alive and healthy. It is an invisible energy field or bioplasmic force that interpenetrates and surrounds the physical body of each individual. It is also known as 'aura'. We are all familiar with portraits of deities and saints belonging to almost every religion with glowing haloes or with laser-like rays shooting from their palms. These are all depictions of energy.
The energy body and the physical body are very closely related. What affects one affects the other. It is through the energy body that Prana or vital energy is absorbed and distributed throughout the whole physical body. Any disease to penetrate the physical body has to first penetrate the energy body. A disease can be located in the energy body three months (and more) before it manifests in the physical body. Just as the visible physical body has blood vessels through which the blood flows, the energy body has invisible channels or nadis through which energy or prana flows. The energy body also comprises of the chakras which control and energise the organs in the physical body. For perfect health the chakras are to be balanced and the nadis free flowing. Any imbalance in the chakras and nadis cause the person to fall ill. For instance if the bioplasmic throat is weakened, then it may manifest on the visible physical body as cough, tonsillitis or other throat related problems, and a depleted liver may manifest as jaundice.
The Pranic Healer scans the aura - the chakras and the nadis to determine their condition. Through this scanning, or energy diagnosis, the healer (by using his sensitive hands) can trace the problem very effectively. Treatment is accomplished through very simple procedures: (1) the removal of the diseased energy which is called "cleansing" and (2) the replenishment of the body with fresh prana or vital energy which is called "energising". The energy for healing is drawn from three vital natural elements - air, sun and earth. While healing the healer cleanses and energies by using his own hands and uses a bowl of water containing sea salt to disintegrate the negative energy he removes from the patient's energy body. Since the treatment is applied totally on the patient's aura, there is no physical contact between the healer and the patient. This "no-touch" therapy is painless and not dependent on any equipment or drugs. Modern medicine disempowers you - you remain at the mercy of the doctor, but Pranic Healing empowers you and enables you to have better health literally "in your hands". However, it is not meant to replace the allopathic system of medicine but to supplement it.
Pranic Healing can be used to heal and prevent many kinds of physical, emotional and mental diseases. Infections, skin diseases, back pain, fractures, arthritis, stones, ulcers, respiratory diseases, sinusitis, asthma, cardiac diseases, stomach disorders are some of the physical ailments that are alleviated by Pranic Healing. Pranic Healing can also increase vitality, enhance the immune system, calm the emotions and improve one's well being. It is also used in the treatment of psychological disorders like depressions, phobias, addictions, conduct and personality disorders, etc.
During healing, to make the healing more effective, it is important that the patient lets go of his/her conditioning, fear and despair, has faith and becomes open to receive the healing energy, otherwise healing is slow. Dr Radha Natarajan came with kidney stones to the Sri Aurobindo Pranic Healing Centre. The doctor wanted to operate on her but she did not want an operation. In five sittings of Pranic Healing the big stones simply disappeared leaving only two minuscule ones. Another person with heart ailment was asked to go for angioplasty. He declined and instead decided to undergo Pranic Healing. Two month later he didn't need angioplasty.
Much of the success of Pranic Healing can be attributed to the efforts of its modern founder Master Choa Kok Sui who has carefully researched and systematized the ancient techniques of bio-energy healing and set up the World Pranic Healing Foundation as a non-profit charitable institution. Since the publication of Master Choa's first book The Ancient Science and Art of Pranic Healing (Miracles Through Pranic Healing) in 1987 this healing art has been spreading internationally.
